“Beni Hoppe”

Product description: Juicy strawberry with rich aroma, perfect balance of sweetness and acidity

We deliver fresh, sweet strawberries, grown with stone-wall strawberry cultivation methods and harvested the morning they are shipped. Kuno has been cultivating strawberries in this way longer than anywhere else in Japan.

Our farm
-The land where our fourth-generation strawberry farm is located is on the coast of Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is very warm land in Japan and is famous as an agricultural zone.
Until recently, it was used to grow large quantities of cucumbers, leafy greens, and shishito peppers.
- Stone wall strawberry cultivation began in Kuno over 110 years ago in the 1890s. It is the first place where this method was used in Japan.
There are several theories, but it is said that strawberries were introduced when seedlings were handed down from the head priest of Toshogu Shrine.
- They were first cultivated nationally using stone-wall cultivation methods.
They accounted for 98% of the Tokyo market in the 1960s.
- Kuno is a national pioneer in fruit farming.

Characteristics of producer

The sandy nature of soil in this area provides ample drainage and thus put little stress on the roots; moreover, cultivating strawberries on stone walls (“ishigaki”) provides a suitable environment for the fruit, further improving conditions for its growth.

Located on the coastline, the fruit benefits from the sea breeze.

Cultivates Akihime, Beni Hoppe, Oi C Beri, and other varieties

“Reliable; Safe; Healthy”
We aim to engage in environmentally friendly agriculture, including reducing the amounts of pesticides and fertilizers.
Certified by Shizuoka Prefecture as “Eco Farmer.”
(While not all of our farms, which are still expanding each year, are certified, all provide the same environment for cultivation)

We are working on reducing the amount of pesticides used by introducing natural predators.
We have introduced the newly developed groundcover Kurapia, which is expected to provide the perfect habitat for the natural predators. We produce succulent strawberries by maximizing the strawberry plant’s innate natural characteristics, such as by utilizing microorganisms to activate the soil. We only use compost originated from plants.

We minimize the use of nitrogen fertilizers as much as possible. (Varies depending on soil analysis)

“Stone-wall cultivation”
Making use of boulders (or concrete more recently) stacked at a certain angle, this cultivation method grows the strawberry plants among the wall’s crevices.
The slant at which the boulders are stacked was developed from our ancestors’ wisdom to maximize exposure to perpendicular sunlight and creating additional heat that is beneficial for the plant’s growth.
In summer, the stone wall is removed to enable fertilization, and then put back together again.   Kuno (Shizuoka) is the only place in Japan that conducts this “ishigaki” stone-wall cultivation of strawberries.

Ishigaki Ichigo (stone-wall strawberries) are filled with the beam and warmth from the sun. That, is what makes them so sweet and delicious.
